Voyage to Greatness
Sailing is an exciting, fun, beautiful, even spiritual activity. To be successful, several people must act in close coordination with a clear vision of the goal to be achieved, an understanding of their particular task, competence in their appointed role, substantial coaching, and patient processing of lessons learned through mistakes.
In short, sailing is a microcosm of the business world today, which relies on high-performance teams to achieve ever-higher standards of performance and efficiency.
The team sailing experience uses the analogy of sailing to bring to light the real-world behavior, skills and attitudes that make or break teams in the workplace. This is accomplished during an exciting and challenging day that will result in a better understanding of what factors define great teams, and what concrete steps can be made to improve team performance.
Objectives
The objectives of this session are to:
- Give participants a basic understanding of the fundamentals of sailing
- Develop an understanding of the factors that determine the level of success of work teams
- Simulate the demands brought to bear on work teams in a real world sailing event
- Examine team performance and identify positive success factors as well as areas for improvement
Program parameters:
The program will take place during a single day, roughly the equivalent of a standard working day. The base of operations will be a hotel, yacht club or conference facility with close access to a marina and a suitable sailing area.
The size of the group that can be accommodated will depend upon the size of the boat used, but a team of six to ten people is considered ideal. For larger groups, several boats may be used and each team must maneuver their own boat to reach the set goals. A facilitator / instructor and a licensed boat captain will be required. For larger boats, a third trained sailor may be needed. Cost for the program will depend significantly upon the size of the boat(s).
